Just like the bunny

While foraging at a thrift shop I unearthed a little crewel kit, circa 1979. It seemed the perfect time to try something new.  I washed the small bundles of wool and let them air dry in case moths had wandered by and taken a bite or two.  They had but only half heartedly.
It was so much fun to stitch!
I made a few tweaks. I replaced the pink wool supplied for the berries with navy and burgundy: blackberry colors.  And turned four flowers destined to be yellow petalled, into white trilliums.  I thought that seemed more wild and woodsy.  Just like the bunny.

Diaper pinned

Aren't babies sweet?
I made two tiny felt babies.  They weren't twins but they were definitely related.  Cousins I think.
I sent the first one to my big sister, the Doll Maker.
It was so much fun to create that I quickly made a second one.
It's pretty easy to make hair for a baby doll.
And a diaper was the entire wardrobe. Also easy.
I crocheted bassinets for both. I'm a newbie crocheter and I can't believe how 3D crochet can be. Round and round you go til there it is!
I thought of embroidering an appropriate sized diaper pin but I had a very vintage and very tiny pin that seemed destined for use, and what's more vintage than a diaper pin!

Chicklet

Thrift shop kit. Just in time for spring

The frame of this little pendant works like a miniature embroidery hoop; a circle of wood with a tiny screw to tighten. It was a little tricky to work with though. I tried to center the embroidery and I tried to keep the grain of the linen straight and I tried to make sure the chick was standing and not leaning and I tried to make sure the fabric was neither pushed to far into the hoop or not pushed far enough. And I tried to make two hands and ten fingers work as a team. More than once.
Ahhh sweet success!
Then I crocheted a teeny tiny chain of thread and added it as a victory lap.

happy new

New Year illustrations always portrayed an old man with a long beard for the passing year and a baby for the new. Happy new to you.

twice as nice

If crocheting with one color is pretty, two is twice as nice.

little friend

country cousin

"Would you like a white mouse or a gray one?" I ask.
"A gray one!" she says, emphatically."I don't want a TAME one!"
Ahhhhhhh, a little wild mouse.
Makes me think of the story of the city mouse and his country cousin.
Sleeping under a leaf seems a given and for that matter so does a basket.

 Goodnight little mouse.

one down

I found a marvelous doily, circa poodle skirt era.

Oh those flowers!

Up-cycling to the resuce!

A few snips and I had gathered a bowl full.

One down, 43 to go.

very

What does a very, very long bulletin board in the children's section of the library need?
A very, very long list of characters to fill it from one end to the other.
I started in the centre, cutting my characters from discarded book pages.
A knight on horseback.
A fearsome fire-breathing dragon.
A bridge to nowhere.
Then I added to the left and right, left and right until the space was spanned.
A towering, flag festooned fortress.
A wizard and his wise owl.
A leaping wolf and prancing unicorn.
Puss’n boots.
Mary Poppins and Alladin’s carpet on a collision course with a crescent moon.
A prince and princess.
These all became a back story to the action up front.
Black silhouettes of a cottage, dimly lit.
A maiden between a mushroom and a gnome.
Peter Pan and Wendy aloft.
The tortoise and the hare.
A swan watching a mermaid dive and fish leap.
A dancing frog and fairies three.
 A reader (of course).
A trio of children.
A maiden in a tower.
A mysterious mouse, and birds of every kind flying high and low and left and right and up and down.
(The blue background paper had been around the block a few times and there were signs galore of tape doing what tape does best. The placement of more than a few characters helped to hide the past life of what was now, blue sky)
Re-use, Re-think, Re-tape.
